Members of the Weighton Waytes Choir are constantly surprised at the depth and scope of talent found amongst it’s number. One of our number – The Reverend Doctor Francis Loftus recently announced that he was a member of York Light Orchestra and that they would like The Waytes to take part in a joint concert entitled “Crescendo” in aid of “York, Mind” and to be held in the wonderful St Helen’s Church, Escrick near York.
Founded in 1947, York Light Orchestra is a collection of 40 or so volunteer musicians who meet weekly and undertake concerts across the region. Waytes member, the enigmatic Francis Loftus is a viola player in the orchestra.
The concert was arranged for 27th April 2024 and because of busy schedules, only one joint rehearsal was possible. In the event, the evening was a great success and the capacity audience were treated to a musical feast by orchestra and choir. The Weighton Waytes and York Light Orchestra performed a selection of pieces from their repertoire. Those from the Orchestra included: The theme from “Gladiator”; The Overture from Die Fledermaus” and “The Greatest Showman”.
Meanwhile, Weighton Waytes selection included: “Sing Cantate Dominie”; “Love Changes Everything” and “Ave Maria” (Caccini).
The two excellent groups of musicians then joined together for a spectacular finale under the baton of Martin Farmery. This included: “Zadok the Priest”; “Amazing Grace” in the style of Pachelbel’s Canon and Jerusalem in which audience joined the musicians.
The evening raised over £850.00 for “Mind, York” and following the new musical friendships forged, it is very likely to be repeated in future years.
